You have finally decided to act. And you are really excited about the changes you are about to make. For the first two weeks, you are feel like a Rockstar. “This is actually not as hard as a thought it would be. I think I can do this.”- You say to yourself.

Then, you talk to a “friend” who is doing something different than you, or maybe you read a post on social media about the “best way” of doing XYZ. “Oh no! Does that mean that I’m doing it wrong?” …and now you are second guessing yourself.

You feel confused and decide to do more research. The problem is that the more you research, the more confused you get.

It is as if there was no right answer. So, you just start making random changes on your original plan (the plan that was actually working for you!). But no matter how much you tweak your plan, you can’t feel in peace.

Then, you have the brilliant idea of measuring your progress (notice that you haven’t been doing this for more than a couple of weeks). “Well, at least I will know if I’m in the right track.”- you say.

Bam! Reality hits you in the face. “What? No visible change! That’s impossible.” Oh wow, all that effort you have been putting in has been in vain. Now, you are really frustrated and start feeling discouraged to continue.

And, the negative self-talk kicks in. In the beginning you try to brush it off. But the voice in your head becomes louder and louder. You start doubting your capabilities. “There must be something wrong with me. I must be broken.” And the more you pay attention to that little voice, the more discouraged you become. Until you finally give up. And that’s how talked yourself out of your dreams.

Does that sound familiar?

Well, this is called self-sabotage and it happens when your values and beliefs are in conflict with your desired outcome. Let me explain better.

When a past experience caused you pain which wasn’t totally resolved, it will create a “scar” in your mind. This “scar” is quite sensitive and every time it is “touched,” it reminds you of the original pain.

In order to protect you, your brain bury that scar in your unconscious mind (so it is out of your awareness) so you can continue with your life.

When things, people, places or events unconsciously remind you of that “scar”, they trigger a response in the form of a feeling (emotion). This feeling then affects your attitude and your actions. And because these feelings are represented by negative emotions (fear, sadness, guilt, anger, resentment, frustration etc), it brings the pain back.

Now, if you are not aware of these things, you will do anything to make the pain go away, including giving up on your dreams.
